Good morning! I'm Nicole Elbert!
And I'm Katie Von Ruden! Welcome back to the "Bear
Facts". Today we're starting our eleventh season here on KLGA, bringing you all the latest news from Bishop Garrigan High School.
It's still August, but we're already well into the school year at Garrigan. In fact, we've even played our first football game of the season-a special "week zero" match-up with Dallas Center/Grimes, a rated team in Class 3-A. At the core of this year's team are seniors like wide receivers Justin Fickbohm, Mark Kohlhaas, and Joe Hellman; running backs Zac Lickteig, Lee Elbert, Mark Steier, and Eric Fouarge; and linemen Tony Hilbert, Mark McGregor, Shannon DeVries, Drew Miller, Tony Hilbert, and Jerry Kohlhaas. Backing them up are thirteen juniors and thirteen sophomores who will round out the Golden Bear squad. Garrigan will be off next week as most other teams start their season, but they'll be back in action September 14 when they take on Algona High.
Next Tuesday the volleyball team starts their season. This year's varsity volleyball team includes seniors Lisa Even, Amy Rahm, Jen Erpelding, Amanda Wolf, Janel Richter, Nellie Fowler, and Chelsie Wood. Joining them are juniors Maria Erpelding, Jenna Kollasch and Lindsay Becker; and sophomores Miranda Boekelman and Nicole Reding. Good luck to Coach Dave Schnurr and the volleyball team!
Cross-country season is also underway. Seniors on this year's team include Jeff Hellman, David Murphy, Sylvia Weber, and Hillary Frideres. Running with them are juniors John Kohlhaas, Tyler Rolling, Molly Black, and Nettie McGuire; and sophomores Matt Courtney, Donnie Monson, and Rose Mayer. Rounding out the squad are freshmen Seth Rogers, Brandon Rowley, Bridget Doughan, Alison Brandenburg, and Alicia Shackelford. The cross-country team will be running at Mason City Newman next Tuesday, and we wish them good luck!
Last week the BGHS freshman class held elections for their class officers. Six pairs of candidates ran for co-president of the Class of 2006, but when the votes were counted the new presidents were Ashley Waller and Melissa Hilbert. The new freshman representatives are Alison Brandenburg and Jude Studer. Congratulations to them!
There was more voting going on last week. The senior class took time at a class meeting last week to nominate this year's Homecoming royal court. The king candidates for 2002 are Justin Fickbohm, Jeff Hellman, Zac Lickteig, Mark Steier, and Alex Vaske. On the girls' side are queen candidates Kim Frideres, Keshar Nadkarni, Maria Paterson, Janel Richter, and Andrea Schiltz. Homecoming will be the week of September 22 - 28. Congratulations to all the members of our royal court.
All the new activities start after a very busy summer. The Golden Bear quiz bowl team started off the summer by traveling to New Orleans for the National Academic Championships. The Bears made a respectable showing at nationals, beating Waverly High School of Elmira, New York. Shortly after returning from New Orleans, quiz bowler Steven Kellner was off to Europe as Garrigan's representative for the Iowa music ambassadors. Garrigan's health occupations team also had a big summer. Matt Studer, Jamie Loebig, and Ashley Thompson were in Anaheim, California for the national HOSA conference, where they took second place in the biomedical debate competition. Congratulations to all these students on their achievement!
Again this year we'll begin our weekly Senior Spotlight by saluting our Student Council Co-Presidents. Here's Joe Hellman to tell you about Nicole Elbert and Andrea Schiltz.
Nicole Elbert comes to Garrigan from the Burt area. During the school day she enjoys classes like Spanish IV, and her activities include band, choir, and student council. Away from Garrigan you might see her working at Hallmark. Nicole wants to major in biology at college, and down the road she plans a career in the health field. Good luck, Nicole!
Andrea Schiltz is a veteran of the girls state golf tournament. Her other activities include student council and plays, and she enjoys classes like Peer Helper and Math V. Andrea is a hard-working girl-she's held down jobs at Fareway, the aquatic center, and the Prime Time supper club. She'll be majoring in business at college, and we wish her all the best.
Thanks, Joe! On our first Golden Bear calendar for the year, we have a long weekend because of the Labor Day holiday. There's no school Monday at Garrigan, but classes resume as usual Tuesday morning.
Tuesday night the volleyball team travels to Estherville, while the cross-country team runs at Mason City Newman.
All next week we'll have the annual calendar drive. Both Garrigan and Seton students will be selling raffle calendars to help earn money for the school's transportation budget.
Next Saturday the fine arts department will be sponsoring a field trip to the Minnesota Renaissance Festival. Also that day former Garrigan student Nick Becker will receive his final ordination in Wesley, as he becomes the newest priest in the
Sioux City Diocese.
That's our first "Bear Facts" for the new school year. Thanks for tuning in, and be sure to catch us here next week and every week to hear all the news from Bishop Garrigan High School.
