THE BEAR FACTS

NOVEMBER 3O, 2OO2

Good morning! I'm Matt Courtney!

And I'm Amber Golwitzer! Welcome to the "Bear Facts". We hope everyone is enjoying your holiday weekend, and we're glad you're joining us to hear the news from Bishop Garrigan High School.

Basketball season is here! The girls started their season last Monday at Sentral, and the boys had their first jamboree last night at Graettinger. Both the Garrigan boys and girls will be fielding younger teams this year. The girls have just two returning seniors: Nellie Fowler and Molly Bartolo. Joining them on the varsity team are Lindsay Becker, Michaela Mescher, Miranda Boekelman, Nettie McGuire, Emily DeWaard, and Nicole Reding. They started their season last Monday at Sentral and will next see action December 6.

On the boys' side, Justin Fickbohm, Jeff Hellman, and Joe Hellman will be sharing their experience with the rest of the team. Juniors Scott Stence, Adam Arndorfer, Grant Smith, Brent Shillington, and Aaron O'Kane and sophomores Matt Courtney, Matt Vitzthum, Mark Parrish, Derek Tindall, and Cole Vautier are also suiting varsity. The boys had their first jamboree last night, and their next game will be December 6. Good luck to both the boys and girls basketball teams all season long!

The next time you want to meet someone who's a recording artist, you don't need to go all the way to Hollywood or New York or London. That's because the musicians right here at Garrigan have recorded their own CD. Make a Joyful Noise is a collection of seventeen songs by the BGHS band and choir. Many of the selections are Christmas music, but you'll also hear the band's award winning number "Walkin' on the Sun" and "Farandole".

If you want a preview before you buy the CD, you can check out Garrigan's website. The band's recording of the school song, "The Washington and Lee Swing" is available on-line at garrigan.unlimitedweb.net. Check out the school song. They you can buy the CDs for just $16 each from any BGHS band or choir member. Quantities are limited, so be sure to get your CD today!

Since recording the CD, the Garrigan musicians have been busy getting ready for the 2002 madrigal. Madrigal 2002 will be Sunday, December 15. Both brunch and dinner will be offered, and at each meal guests will be treated to a feast and serenaded with the holiday sounds of merry old England. You can contact Marty Patterson or Lisa Cassmann for tickets.

Last week eight seniors and seventeen juniors were inducted into the Garrigan chapter of the National Honor Society. NHS honors achievement in scholarship, leadership, service, and character. Our Senior Spotlight this week shines on Eric Fouarge and Nellie Fowler. Here to tell you about them is Anthony McGuire..

Eric Fouarge is an Algona native who enjoys working with technology. In addition to computer work, Eric is active on the tech crew for plays. He also enjoys quiz bowl, and his other activities include football and track. Away from school you might see him cooking up your breakfast at the Chrome Country Inn. Eric will be off to college next year, and we wish him all the best.

Danielle Fowler is one of the top athletes in the Class of 2003. We mentioned her earlier as one of just two returning seniors on the girls basketball team. She was also one of the top volleyball players, and Nellie also enjoys playing softball. She will also be at college next fall. Good luck, Nellie!

Thanks, Anthony! On our Golden Bear calendar this week, tomorrow is the first Sunday of Advent. Tuesday afternoon we'll have our annual Advent penance service here at Garrigan.

Wednesday after school quiz bowl students will take part in the Knowledge Master competition. That night the freshman and JV basketball teams will take on West Bend/Mallard.

Thursday there's staff development at Garrigan. Between that and the magazine sales reward there are no classes for BGHS students. Friday the danz squad leaves for state contest and the basketball Bears host Webster City.

Finally next Saturday there's quiz bowl at Spirit Lake. Also that afternoon the varsity basketball teams play at Garner.

That's the "Bear Facts" for Thanksgiving weekend. Thanks for listening, and be sure to catch us again next week for more news from Bishop Garrigan High School.
