Good morning! I'm Tyler Struck!
I'm Andrea Schiltz!
And I'm Steven Kellner! You're listening to the "Bear Facts," the weekly radio show from Bishop Garrigan High School.
Bishop Garrigan had a sensational day last Saturday at the state individual speech contest in Fort Dodge. Of the school's twenty-two entries, fifteen received Division I--or "excellent"--ratings. Among the students earning I's were Bob Brandenburg in Acting; Angie Kohlhaas and Lynn Kohlhaas in Poetry; Janet Kramer, Marian Studer, and Mandy Rahm in Prose; and Amanda Freking in Literary Program.
Other I's went to Jake Kohlhaas in Spontaneous Speaking; Tyler Struck in Radio News Announcing; Amanda Freking and Angie Kohlhaas in Storytelling; Bob Brandenburg and Chris Kohlhaas in After-Dinner Speaking; and Jake Kohlhaas and Chris Kohlhaas in Improvisational Acting. Seven Garrigan entries received Division II--or "good"--ratings. Students earning II's include Michael Loebach, Nicole Elbert, Sarah Schmitt, Rachel Foth, Tyler Struck, Tony Detrick, and David Murphy.
The ultimate goal of almost every student in speech is to be named an Outstanding Performer and be invited to appear at the All-State Speech Festival. This year two Garrigan entries received the highest honor in speech. Bob Brandenburg received the All-State nod for his acting selection "Lamentations of a Teenager". Tyler Struck will also be going to All-State in Radio News Announcing. This is Tyler's second All-State nomination this year, since he was also part of the improv group that gave an outstanding performance last winter.
The All-State Speech Festival will be held on Monday, April 3, at the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls. Bob will be performing around 11am in the main auditorium of the Strayer-Wood Theatre at UNI, and Tyler will perform in the afternoon at the university's Communication Arts Center. Congratulations to Bob and Tyler, to coaches Mary McCall and David Burrow, and to the whole Golden Bear speech team.
Tonight is your last chance to catch Bishop Garrigan's spring play. "The World We Live In" was wriutten in Czechoslovakia in the 1930s, and it's a fable that uses bugs as a metaphor for modern society. The play's three acts discuss selfish love, allowing your possessions to possess you, and the foolishness of war. Tyler Struck plays the vagrant who ties the whole play together.
We told you the full cast of the show a couple of weeks ago, but another important part of every play is the backstage crew, who keep the lights and sound going and make sure everything is running smoothly. This year's tech crew includes Adam Cink, Eric Fouarge, Adam Gisch, Tony Hilbert, and Kevin Lind. Also helping out behind the scenes are Josh Roethler, Nick Roethler, Mark Steier, and John Stetzel. The show's final performance is tonight at 7:30 in Friedmann Auditorium.
While you've heard more about football and basketball, one of Garrigan's most successful teams this year has been the school's math competition team. After two big competitions against huge schools in eastern Iowa, the team heads west to Sioux Center this morning to see how they fare against schools that are closer to their size. Among those scheduled to compete today are junior Lynn Kohlhaas; sophomores Rebecca McGuire, Jenny Faber, and Mandy Rahm; and freshmen Rosalind Kirsch, David Murphy, and Steven Kellner. Good luck to Coach Daryl Kohlhaas and the math team!
The long-awaited intramural basketball play-offs begin tomorrow. More than seventy players have been competing since January, and now it's time for sudden death. Chad Mescher's team has the first seed in the play-offs, with a perfect 6-0 record for the regular season. They'll be taking on Adam Rahm's 1-5 team tomorrow afternoon at 12:30.
The second play-off game will be at 1:15pm. It will pit Eric Becker's team (who have averaged 79 points per game) against David Monson's 7th seed team. Andrew Hellman's third-seeded team will face Jake Kohlhaas' fifth-seeds at 2:00pm. Tomorrow's last game will pit the closest-matched teams--Ben Meyer's team and Jason Geving's team.
There's a tradition at Garrigan to elect an All-Intramural Team consisting of the top players from all the different teams. Part of the All-Intramural selections are based on scoring during the season, and part is based on an on-line ballot. You can join in the balloting by going to the Garrigan website at "garrigan.unlimitedweb.net". Click on "Sports" or "Activities" to go to "intramurals, and then vote for your favorite intramural basketball players. We'll let you know who came out on top at the end of the season.
This week's Senior Spotlight shines on Nathan Frideres and Matt Rahm. You may have seen Nate working at the Algona Dairy Queen. At school his biggest activities have been cross-country and quiz bowl. Nate is an honor student who will be honored at next week's Academic Banquet. Good luck, Nate!
Matt Rahm was one of the leaders on last fall's state runner-up Golden Bear football team. This winter he's been playing intramural basketball on Jake Kohlhaas' team. Matt is a Wesley native who will be off to college next fall. We wish him the very best of luck.
On this week's Golden Bear calendar, there's the math competition today in Sioux Center. Also today is the state Health Occupations conference in Des Moines.
Tonight is your last chance to catch "The World We Live In". You can see the spring play tonight at 7:30 in the Garrigan gym. Then tomorrow there's the intramural basketball play-offs.
Tomorrow night the girls' basketball team will be holding their annual awards potluck. Then on Monday the health class will visit area nursing homes.
Monday and Tuesday nights we'll have registration for the 2000-2001 school year at the Rochleau Center at St. Cecelia's. Tuesday a group of nurse's aide students will take a field trip.
Tuesday night we'll have football cheerleading try-outs. Then Wednesday is National Tornado Preparedness Day. Also on Wednesday fourteen Garrigan students will be at a business competition at Iowa Lakes Community College.
Thursday night is the annual Academic Banquet. Then next Saturday there's the solo and ensemble music contest.
That's the "Bear Facts" for March. Thanks for listening, and be sure to join us again next week for more news from Bishop Garrigan High School.
