The Bear Facts

March 24, 2001

Good morning!  I'm Jeff Hellman!

I'm Sarah Schmitt!

And I'm Rosalind Kirsch!  You're listening to the "Bear Facts".  The snow is finally melting, and we're pleased to wish you a Happy Spring from everyone here at Bishop Garrigan High School.

Spring brought some good news for the Golden Bear speech team.  Garrigan did extremely well at the state speech contest in Carroll last Saturday.  Out of 19 entries competing, 15 received Division "I"-or "excellent"-ratings.  Students earning "I"s were Autumn Thompson in Public Address; Marian Studer, Mandy Rahm, and Keshar Nadkarni in Poetry; Steven Kellner in Radio; Rebecca McGuire and Bob Brandenburg in Acting; Amber Golwitzer in Prose; David Murphy and Chris Kohlhaas in Improvisational Acting; Angie Kohlhaas and Amanda Freking in Literary Program; and Amanda Freking in Storytelling.

Monday we found out that four of those students earned the top honor that is possible in speech.  They were named "Outstanding Performers" and will be honored at the All-State Speech Festival next month in Cedar Falls.  Marian Studer, Angie Kohlhaas, Bob Brandenburg, and Keshar Nadkarni all received all-state nominations.  This is the most all-staters Garrigan has ever gotten in a year, and we're proud of their outstanding accomplishments!

This weekend ten Garrigan girls are in Des Moines for the seventeenth annual Iowa Spring HOSA Conference.  HOSA is the Health Occupations Student Association, where future doctors, nurses, paramedics, and veterinarians practice their skills.  Garrigan and Algona High have a joint HOSA chapter, under the leadership of Iowa Lakes nursing instructor Jeanne Wunder.  This year, though, all the entries at state are from Garrigan students.

Jamie Loebig, Ashley Thompson, Brittany Weir, Heather Forburger, Deanna Kohlhaas, Melissa Lancaster, and Teresa McGuire are all entered in the CPR category.  They'll be showing off their technique on the Resusci-Annies.  Brittany, Heather, Deanna, Holly, Teresa, are also entered in Creative Problem Solving-as is Bethany Weir.  Another popular category is Extemporaneous Writing-which features Jamie, Ashley, Heather, Holly, and Melissa-along with Tricia Eischen.

Bethany Weir is also entered in Job Search, and Teresa McGuire and Deanna Kohlhaas are competing in Medical Math.  Brittany and Bethany Weir are entered in Human Growth and Development.  The final category is Biomedical Debate-and the students competing are Jamie Loebig, Ashley Thompson, Melissa Lancaster, and Tricia Eischen.  Good luck to everyone competing at state HOSA!

Tonight is your last chance to catch Garrigan's spring play.  This year the drama department is presenting the Agatha Christie murder mystery "Ten Little Indians".  The cast includes seniors Lynn Kohlhaas, Amanda Freking, Nick Even, Paul Loebach, Angie Kohlhaas, and Tony Schmitt; juniors Chris Kohlhaas, Bob Brandenburg, and Michael Loebach; and sophomore David Murphy.  Kevin Lind and Adam Cink form the tech crew, Rosalind Kirsch and Marian Studer designed the set and publicity, and Tanya Broesder is the stage manager.  Showtime is at 7:30 tonight in Friedmann Auditorium, and we encourage everyone to come.

The Golden Bear danz squad recently announced their team members for 2001-2002.  Next year's squad includes juniors Allison Courtney, Stephanie Hilbert, Jamie Roethler, Laura Seeley, and Monica Studer; sophomores Kim Frideres, Nikki Loebig, Amanda Wolf, Sarah Schmitt, Rachel Foth, and Lindsey Eischen; plus freshmen Nicole Krieps and Maria Erpelding and eighth-grader Ashley Shaw.  Alternates for the danz squad are sophomore Jenny Erpelding and freshmen Becca Studer and Melissa Vaske.

The intramural basketball season is drawing to a close.  Tomorrow will be the end of the regular season, and then the top four teams will advance to play-offs.  Last weekend Jamie Loebig made intramural history by becoming the first girl ever to score over 100 points in intramurals.  Steven Courtney, Justin Froehlich, Mark Meister, Ben Meyer, Nick Lane, Josh Richter, Tyler Erpelding, and Kyle Weiland are also part of the 100-point club.  Every team has won at least one game this year, and the big match-up will come tomorrow when the two undefeated teams go against each other for the top seed in play-offs.

This week's Senior Spotlight shines on Shannon Hall and Cody Youngwirth.  Here with the details is Rosalind.

Shannon Hall is probably best known as a receiver on the Golden Bear football team.  Away from school you may have seen him working at Sister Sarah's Restaurant.  He enjoys classes like Economics, and when he's not at school he likes intramural basketball and having fun with his friends.

Cody Youngwirth comes to Garrigan from the Wesley area.  Cody is a fun-loving guy who likes classes like Applied Math and Comp I.  Both Cody and Shannon would like to go to college next year, and we wish them all the best.

On this week's Golden Bear calendar, today there's a car wash at Kemna's sponsored by the girls' golf team.  Also today the math team is competing at Dordt College.

Tonight at 7:30 you can catch "Ten Little Indians" in Friedmann Auditorium.  Then tomorrow is the last day of the regular season for intramural basketball.

Monday and Tuesday nights we'll have registration for 2001-2002 in the Rochleau Center at St. Cecelia's.  There's also football cheerleading try-outs Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday.

Tuesday afternoon we'll have our Lenten penance service at 1:15.  Then on Wednesday Model UN meets.

Friday the gym closes to decorate for Gala, 2001-where this year we're celebrating 728 points of light, one for each student at Garrigan and Seton.

Next Saturday is the state solo and ensemble music contest.  Also that day there's a quiz bowl tournament at Boone.

That's the "Bear Facts" for this week.  Thanks for listening, and be sure to tune in again next week for more news from Bishop Garrigan High School.
