The Bear Facts
February 28, 2004

Good morning! I'm Brooke Myers!

I'm Scott Stence!

And I'm Jesse Bode! Welcome once again to the "Bear Facts", the radio show where each week we bring you all the news from Bishop Garrigan High School.

There are three new trophies in the lobby at Garrigan. They belong to the Golden Bear math team, who had a very successful day when they competed last Saturday at Iowa State University in Ames. Two separate groups of Bears took first and second place in the 9th and 10th grade division for schools with less than 750 students, while Garrigan's varsity team took third place overall. Freshmen Tony Rouse, Maria Kohlhaas, and JoAnn Kirsch; sophomores Jacob Hellman, Gavin Freking, Jeff Lappe, and Spenser Rahm; juniors Samantha Kirsch and Matt Courtney; and senior John Kohlhaas all earned individual awards in the math competition. Congratulations to Coach Daryl Kohlhaas and the math team!

Today students from thirty different schools around the area are at Garrigan for the Iowa High School Speech Association district individual speech contest. Garrigan has hosted district contest for the last twenty years, and each year it's one of the biggest events that takes place at the school. The Bears themselves have twenty-three different entries at contest. The day starts off in just a few minutes, when Jacob Hellman tells the story of "Who Did Patrick's Homework?" Right after that Eric Cassmann tells another story-this time "Chicken Little".

Later this morning Amber Golwitzer presents a literary program on "Teenagers", Chris Loebach presents "Supermoo" in Storytelling, and John Kohlhaas competes in Radio News Announcing. Then Logan Wood tells the story "Big David, Little David", Brandon Rowley presents an improvisation, Samantha Kirsch tells the story of "The Frog Prince", Alex Elbert does radio, Garrison Brosnan competes in improv, and Anna Bormann reads the poem "The House with Nobody In It".

This afternoon Cassie Recker will present a literary program on "Visual Images". Then Jesse Bode will present his radio announcing entry. Later Eric Cassmann acts out the scene "The Driving Instructor", Chris Loebach competes in improvisation, Nancy Syharath reads a poetry version of "The Three Little Pigs", and Amber Golwitzer presents the prose piece "I Fall in Love". Josh Broesder will act out a scene called "Girls", Brooke Myers will read the poem "The Joy of Being Poor", Amanda Golwitzer will present the prose piece "The Pet Shop Sketch", and Sadie Foertsch will read the poem "Cinderella". The day wraps up with JoAnn Kirsch acting out "Peggy's Birthday" and Kathy Preylowski reading the prose selection "So You're Kate's Girl". Best wishes to all the speech students. Break a leg, everyone!

This June the Golden Bear quiz bowl team will be making their seventh trip to nationals. John Kohlhaas, Tyler Rolling, Amber Golwitzer, Josh Broesder, Scott Stence, Eric Cassmann, Adam Cink, Jesse Bode, and Matt Coutrney all plan to head to Washington, D.C. for the 22nd annual National Academic Championships. To help raise money for the trip, they're participating in the Bishop Garrigan Trivia Challenge. National-bound quiz bowl players are getting people to sponsor them based on how many of 200 questions they can answer. So if a quiz bowl player asks you to sponser them, please pledge what you can to help them make the trip.

We've finished up the regular season for intramural basketball. The team of Miles Berte, Mason Elbert, David Rasmussen, Colby Reding, Kris Sutter, Nick Golwitzer, and Kyle Frideres is undefeated and has the first seed going into play-offs. Interestingly, the second seeded team of John Kohlhaas, Jason Lallier, Eric Cassmann, Ben Geelan, Andrew Thilges, and Josh Broesder actually scored 142 more points than the #1-seed team. Also in the top four are Jim Garman's team of juniors and Jeff Lappe's team of sophomores. Play-offs will begin Sunday, March 7.

Our Senior Spotlight this week shines on Tim Arndorfer. Tim comes to Garrigan from the Corwith-Wesley area. His biggest activity over the years has been baseball, which he has played all through high school. He also plays intramural basketball, and he's worked on the tech crews for plays and concerts. Away from school you might see him working at Hy-Vee. Tim has taken just about every computer class offered at Garrigan, and he plans to continue working with technology after high school. We wish Tim all the best in the future.

On our Golden Bear calendar there's the district individual speech contest today at Garrigan. Then tomorrow confirmation candidates will undergo the Rite of Continuing Conversion at parish masses.

Tuesday night is the boys basketball district final. The game will be at Estherville at 7pm. Then on Wednesday Garrigan's law class will be visiting the courthouse.

Thursday will be Non-Public Schools Lobby Day at the Iowa State House. Garrigan's danz squad will be in Des Moines to represent the school. Thursday and Friday nights we'll have the pops concert here at school.

Friday night is the boys substate basketball game, which will be at Spencer. If Garrigan is playing that night, the pops concert will be moved to Saturday. Also next Saturday the math team travels to Dordt College in Sioux Center.

Finally this week we'd like to salute Garrigan senior Adam Arndorfer, who was recently selected to be part of the prestigious McDonald's All-American Basketball Team. Congratulations, Arnie!

That's the "Bear Facts" for February. Thanks for joining us, and be sure to tune in again next week for more news from Bishop Garrigan High School.
