Good morning! I'm Amanda Golwitzer!
I'm Ashley Waller!
And I'm Brandon Rowley! You're listening to the "Bear Facts", the radio show where every week we tell you what's going on at Bishop Garrigan High School.
We've just wrapped up Homecoming, one of the busiest but most fun weeks of the school year. This was an awesome Homecoming. We started some new traditions, and we kept enough of the old to keep in touch with the past. One of the old traditions is the crowning of the annual Homecoming king and queen. When the votes were counted, the names announced on Wednesday night were Nicole Reding and Matt Courtney. Naming Matt king gave us an interesting tie to our friends across town, since last year his sister Laura was the Homecoming queen at Algona High.
We had an Olympic theme for Homecoming this year, and we used that as an excuse to start a new tradition, a day of fun competition between all four of the classes at the school. We held "the Garrigan Olympics" on Wednesday, and there was something that almost everyone could enjoy. The upperclassmen won every single event, but even the freshmen agreed it was a great day.
When the day was over the seniors were victorious in volleyball, trivia, video football, backgammon, Texas hiold 'em, ultimate Frisbee, and both boys and girls tug of war. The junior class won kickball, Twister, dodgeball, and Halo. There was also a lip sync contest, with top honors going to Andrea Arndorfer, Lizzie Mayer, Ashley Waller, and Chris Kirsch. The student council did a great job organizing things, and we all had a wonderful day.
There were a lot of other parts to our traditional class competition, too. Last Sunday night the freshmen and senior girls beat the sophomores and juniors in the annual powder puff football game. The final score was 18 - 6. Monday night we built floats. The judges liked all the floats, but they chose to give top honors to the juniors. The sophomores went from worst to first in the skit competition. Last year they were practically laughed off the stage, but this year the same group won "top skit" honors.
The judges also felt the sophomores had designed the top hoop for the athletes to go through at the pep rally. They probably drew the judges attention with their unique gold on black design. The spirit competition at the pep rally was one of the best ever, with all four classes really getting into it. Close as it was, the judges had to pick someone-and they chose to give the spirit stick to the seniors.
We had nearly 100% participation on all our special dress days for Homecoming week, so a lot of the competition between classes came down to the other new event, a food drive to bring in goods for the Kossuth County Food Pantry. The class competition was still tight on Friday, and donating to the food drive could easily make the difference. Everybody knew that, and Christian Leadership director Rob Meister was really impressed with how well all the students supported the food drive. Instead of just bringing in one can or box, lots of students brought whole shopping bags full of food-making this easily the best food drive we've ever held.
The final results of the class competition were still out when we recorded this show yesterday. It was a very tight race between the juniors and the seniors. We'll let you know the overall winners on next week's show. No matter who won, though, everyone agrees that we had a great time all through Homecoming week.
For Homecoming week, our Senior Spotlight shines on our queen, Nicole Reding. Nicole is an all-conference volleyball and softball player who is also co-editor of Garrigan's yearbook. She is active in student council and Christian Leadership, and you've probably heard her announcing hear on the "Bear Facts". When she's not at Garrigan you might see her working as a volunteer coach at the "Y". Nicole would like to major in either elementary education or physical therapy at college, and we wish her all the best. Congratulations to our Homecoming queen, Nicole Reding.
On our Golden Bear calendar, this morning the JV volleyball team plays at Algona High and the freshmen play at North Kossuth. Then tomorrow the day is empty, so we can rest up after all the Homecoming events.
Monday the cross-country team runs at Humboldt. Also that night there's freshman and sophomore football, with the Bears playing at Armstrong-Ringsted.
Tuesday is the International Day of Peace. Our local Presentation Sisters will be joining with members of their order around the world in twenty-four hours of continuous prayers for world peace.
Next Thursday the volleyball team plays at Clear Lake. Friday the football team continues their district season as they travel to Rockford. Then next Saturday we'll be hosting the BGHS volleyball tournament.
That's the "Bear Facts" for Homecoming. Thanks for joining us, and be sure to catch us again one week from now when we'll be back with more news from Bishop Garrigan High School.
