The Bear Facts - March 15, 2003

Good morning! I'm Steven Kellner!

And I'm Jenna Hansen! You're listening to the "Bear Facts", the radio show where each week we bring you all the news from Bishop Garrigan High School.

Last Saturday the Golden Bear math team braved ice and snow to compete at the Dordt College Math Competition in Sioux Center. They had a very good day, finishing in second place overall in the tournament. Junior Scott Stence and freshman Jeff Lappe became the seventh and eighth Garrigan students to qualify for the state math finals this year. Both of them brought home individual medals-as did Spenser Rahm, Noah Devine, Jacob Hellman, Samantha Kirsch, John Kohlhaas, and Jeff Hellman. To top things off, Kandice Roethler, Rosalind Kirsch, and Jeff Hellman combined to win the relay round at the tournament. Congratulations on another great showing by the BGHS math team!

Next Wednesday the Golden Bear danz squad leaves for sunny California. They qualified for the National Dance Association national dance and drill team finals by winning the Iowa state championship last December. Next weekend they'll perform in the national competition at Disneyland. The group will stay overnight in Omaha Wednesday night and then fly out on Thursday. After a day of rehearsals, they'll perform Saturday morning at Disneyland. They'll spend Sunday relaxing on the beach and sightseeing in Beverly Hills, and they fly back to Iowa Monday the 24th. Good luck at nationals to the danz squad!

Gala 2003 is less than a month away. This year's big celebration will be Saturday night, April 12th. The theme this year is "Gala Magic", and the planning committee is working hard to create a truly magical evening for guests. Roving magicians will be among the entertainment this year, and again guests will bid on live and silent auction items as they enjoy a first-class meal served by a waitstaff made up of Garrigan students. Gala is the biggest fundraiser of the year for Garrigan and Seton, with annual income measured in hundreds of thousands of dollars. We'll fill you in on more details of Gala as the big night approaches.

We're between sports seasons here at Garrigan right now, but we're proud to celebrate the athletic accomplishments of some of our alumni. This weekend 2000 graduate Angie Froehlich is playing in the NCAA regional finals for the right to advance to the Final Four. Angie plays for North Dakota State University, which had a regular season record of 25 - 6, with all of their losses coming to top-ten rated teams. They have a #3 seed in the tournament. She is the second leading scorer on the team, averaging over 12 points per game. She leads the team in field goal percentage, assists, and free throws, and she is second in steals. Angie is the first Golden Bear athlete ever to advance so far in NCAA competition, and we wish her and to the NDSU Bison.

Two other alumni have also been making news lately. 2002 graduate Ashley Arndorfer just completed her first season at Wayne State University. She averaged 8 points per game and had 45 three-pointers, 43 assists, and 28 steals for the season. Meanwhile 2001 graduate Brad Nelson is at spring training in Phoenix preparing for his third season in professional baseball. Baseball America recently rated Brad the Milwaukee Brewers' #1 overall prospect, and Major League Baseball rated him among the top 10 prospects in the National League. Brad will likely start the 2003 season in the California League, but most insiders expect him to quickly be promoted to the AA Huntsville Stars. Congratulations to all these alumni on their achievements.

Our Senior Spotlight this week shines on Nikki Loebig. Here to tell you about her is Nellie Fowler.

Nikki Loebig comes to Garrigan from the Wesley area. By far her biggest activity in high school has been danz squad, and she'll be one of the dancers heading to Anaheim for the nationals next week. Nikki was also a football cheerleader, and in the past you may have even heard her announcing here on the "Bear Facts". Nikki will be off to college next year, and we wish her all the best.

Thanks, Nellie! There's nothing on the Golden Bear calendar today, but tomorrow afternoon we'll be finishing up the regular season in intramural basketball. There's no school at Garrigan or Seton on Monday, as we finish up a four-day weekend on St. Patrick's Day.

Golf practice begins on Monday. Then Tuesday is Eighth Grade Day, when next year's freshman will be visiting the school and finding out what things are like at Garrigan.

Wednesday many Garrigan students will be giving blood. That night the boys basketball team will have their awards potluck. Then Thursday is the first day of spring.

Also on Thursday the Health Occupations Student Association-HOSA-will be competing at the state conference in Des Moines and the danz squad leaves for the national competition in Anaheim.

Finally next Friday the choir will be attending the chamber choir festival at Buena Vista University in Storm Lake, and Saturday there's the state individual speech contest.

That's the "Bear Facts" for this week. Thanks for listening, and be sure to tune in again next week for more news from Bishop Garrigan High School.
