The Bear Facts
January 12, 2013
Good morning! I’m Elliot Boisjolie!
I’m Andrew McGuire!
And I’m CC! Thanks for joining us for the “Bear Facts”, the radio show where each week we keep you up-to-date on all the news from Bishop Garrigan High School.
Today is a big day for Coach Daryl Kohlhaas and the Golden Bear math team. Eleven Garrigan students are down in Iowa Falls this morning for one of the biggest Great Plains Math League competitions of the year. Senior Allison Frideres and juniors Brittany Kirsch and Jake Hamilton are at the core of the team. Also competing are sophomores Kaitlyn Fogarty, Zach Kollasch, Sia Suttisirkil, Dorothy Kirsch, Tony Kollasch, and Mark Fakler; and freshmen Kylie Fox and Devin Degen.
Math competitions include the target round, where each person takes a hard math test. Then there’s the team round, where students work together in groups of three to solve tough problems. There’s also the relay round, where each player passes an answer on to another player, who in turn uses that answer to do more calculations. Garrigan is hoping to do well in all of those rounds and qualify for the state competition which will be this April in Iowa City.
Next Wednesday twenty-one members of Garrigan’s Solid Gold Marching Band will be over in Storm Lake for the annual Sioux City Diocese Honor Band. Among those selected for this prestigious event are Grace Steil, Melanie Mergen, Levi Bernhard, Taylor Frideres, Betty Straub, and Brittany Kirsch. Also honored are Morgan Frideres, Johanna Vaske, Jackie Origer, and Nick Bronk.
Dorothy Kirsch, Hannah Bernhard, Dustin Miller, Corey Weydert, Jedd Magill, and Sean Hart were also selected for the diocesan honor band. Rounding out the honorees are Jake Hamilton, Shawn Vaske, Mark Fakler, and Janet Kenyon. Congratulations to director Ken Ferjak and all the honor band nominees!
Intramural basketball action begins tomorrow. There are several teams with good prospects this year. There’s one adult team this year, organized by principal Lynn Miller. Joining him are faculty, staff, and board members including Beany Bode, Brandon Schwab, Beth Byrkeland, Erin Miller, Marty Wadle, Mark Meister, Chad Hall, and Doug Miller.
Among the student teams, the pre-season favorite is probably the team captained by Victor Berte and Bobby Plathe. That team also includes seniors Elliot Boisjolie, Andrew McGuire, Dustin Miller, and Jake Kollasch. Another top team will feature captain Andrew Eden and fellow seniors Charlie Thilges, Jason Reding, Jonathan Berte, Thomas Bradley, and Joseph Skilling.
Junior Jake Hamilton and sophomore Mark Fakler are jointly captaining another team, which includes Shawn Vaske, Zach Kollasch, Tony Kollasch, Sean Hart, Santiago Schmidt, and Jedd Magill. Dillon Walker is captain of a team that includes Connor Langermann, Corey Weydert, Bailey Kohlhaas, Vanessa Dodds, and Vanessa Arndorfer.
The final intramural team is made up mostly of danz squad members. Mallory Schiltz is the captain, and her teammates are Mariah McCall, Kassidy Schiltz, Hunter Theesfeld, Kaitlyn Fogarty, Sam Kollasch, Makayla Foertsch, Hannah Boisjolie, Paige Berte, Kendra Roethler, Patricia Brandt, Megan Lappe, and Logan Kumm. Intramural games will be Sunday afternoons throughout the winter. Good luck to all the teams!
This coming week three BGHS students will be headed on a trip to Haiti. Noelle Vitzthum, Logan Kumm, and Amelia Golwitzer will be participating in a mission project at St. Cecelia’s twin parish, St. Jeanne de Chantal in Haiti. This past week we had a prayer service to bless the work the girls will be doing, and we wish them a good and productive trip.
Our Senior Spotlight this week shines on John Burns. If you follow Golden Bear sports, you’ve probably come across John Burns’ name. He’s the leading scorer on the varsity basketball team, and right before Christmas he scored his 1000th career point. John went to state in baseball last summer, and he’s one of the students who helps maintain the BGHS website. He wants to play basketball in college, and he’s considering going to Creighton. Good luck, John!
On our Golden Bear calendar this week, the math team is in Iowa Falls this morning for a Great Plains Math League competition. Tomorrow intramural basketball begins, with the KC free throw contest following.
Monday the Algona Community Schools are off, but there is school at Garrigan and Seton. We’ll have parish busing that day, and going to school now means we’ll be getting out earlier in the spring.
The school board meets on Tuesday. Also on Tuesday the Garrigan Christian Leadership in Action group will be going to the Mary’s Place mission in Minneapolis. That night there’s a basketball quad, with the Bears playing at Humboldt. Then Wednesday we’ll dismiss early for teacher inservice.
The diocesan honor band is also on Wednesday down at Buena Vista University. Thursday there’s JV basketball at West Bend Mallard. Then on Friday the varsity Bears will take on Iowa Falls Alden.
That’s the “Bear Facts” for this week. Thanks for joining us, and be sure to tune in again next week for more news from Bishop Garrigan High School.
