The Bear Facts
October 10, 2026

Good morning! I’m Aidan Deitering!

I’m Mike Joyce!

And I’m Karson Sidles! Thanks for joining us for the “Bear Facts”, the weekly radio show from Bishop Garrigan High School.

Last night we celebrated Senior Night for the fall activities here at Bishop Garrigan. Seniors in football, cross-country, cheerleading, and band were honored. There are ten seniors on this year’s Golden Bear football team: Mike Joyce, Nate Leerar, Leo Snyder, Dalton Klenz, Weston Rosenmeyer, Madden Miller, Matt Besch, Marshall Bormann, Sawyer Herrick, and Karson Sidles.

The girls’ swim team includes senior Cora Deardeuff. In cheerleading, the seniors are Kylie Capesius, Harper Nelson, Bree Ludwig, and Shiloh Trainer. There are three seniors in cross-country: Corbin Darling, Eva Kohlhaas, and Sheila Reding. There are no senior volleyball players this year, but there are seven seniors in band: Gavin Rogers, Aidan Deitering, Leo Snyder, Shiloh Trainer, Caelum Blocker, Corbin Darling, and Aiden Lichter.

The band has a big day today. They’re down in Ft. Dodge this morning for the state marching band contest. The band did great in street marching for the parade competition on Algona Band Day. They also played well in the field contest, but their lack of a flag corps reduced their overall score. Flags aren’t considered in the scoring at state, so they’re hoping for a better showing today. Garrigan’s Solid Gold Marching Band will be performing at 9:15 this morning down at Dodger Stadium in Ft. Dodge. Good luck to them!

A couple weeks ago we noted that Bishop Garrigan now has its own FFA chapter. Last week eight members of the Garrigan FFA competed in the North Central District Soil Judging Contest, which was held at NIACC in Mason City, and they did very well overall. The team of Weston Rosenmeyer, Sawyer Herrick, Noah Schafer, and Gage Meyer won a golf award, finishing in 9th place out of 66 teams in the contest.

Garrigan’s second team featured Graclyn Eastman, Sheila Reding, Bree Ludwig, and Josephine Joyce. They finished in 38th place overall and won a silver award. Congratulations to all the Golden Bear FFA competitors and to chapter sponsor Kaitlin Rosenmeyer. We know this is just the first of many great things they’ll be doing.

The DECA chapter at Bishop Garrigan is working to fight food insecurity. At all the home football and volleyball games this month they’re collecting donations for the Kossuth County Food Pantry. Another service project that happened recently was a blood drive organized by Cora Deardeuff and Sheila Reding that attracted students, staff members, and people from the community.

Four Bishop Garrigan dancers were recently selected to be a part of the All-Iowa Honor Dance Team. Rachel Kahle, Avery Culbertson, Kylie Capesius, and Delaney Arndorfer competed against the best dancers in the state to win that honor. They’ll be showing their talent as part of the entertainment at the state girls’ basketball championship next March. Congratulations, dancers!

Last Friday the Golden Bear football team took over sole possession of first place in District #2 of the eight-player class. They had been tied for the lead with North Union before beating the Warriors last Friday night. The Bears will wrap up their regular season next Friday, when they travel to West Bend—Mallard. We should be hosting the first round of playoffs on October 23rd.

Our Senior Spotlight this week shines on Kylie Capesius. Here to tell you about her is Nate Leerar.

You heard earlier on our show that Kylie Capesius was selected as an All-Iowa dancer. You may have also heard her announcing here on the “Bear Facts”. Kylie is a LuVerne native who also enjoys cheerleading, choir, speech, drama, and DECA. She works as an aide at a nursing home and also as a nanny. Next year Kylie wants to attend Mercy College, and she’d like a career as a nurse in neonatal intensive care. Best wishes, Kylie!

Thanks, Nate! On our Golden Bear calendar this week, there’s state band this morning in Ft. Dodge. Also today there’s a girls swim meet in Johnston.

There’s no school Monday because of a teacher inservice. Monday night the JV football team plays St. Edmond at the Iowa Central field in Ft. Dodge.

Tuesday the volleyball team will host Mason City Newman as part of the Top of Iowa Conference Tournament. We’ll have mass on Wednesday morning, and Thursday the school board meets.

The cross-country team runs in the Top of Iowa Conference cross-country meet on Thursday. The meet will be held at NIACC in Mason City. There’s also a swim meet in Spencer Thursday night.

Next Friday the football team makes a short trip west to take on West Bend—Mallard. Finally next Saturday we’ll be hosting our annual quiz bowl tournament.

That’s the “Bear Facts” for this week. Thanks for tuning in, and be sure to catch the show again next week for more news from Bishop Garrigan High School.
