The Bear Facts

DECEMBER 9, 2000

Good morning! I'm Sarah Schmitt!

And I'm Steven Kellner! Welcome once again to the "Bear Facts," KLGA's weekly radio show from Bishop Garrigan High School.

It's time for madrigal! "What's madrigal?" you ask. Well--it's a dinner theater set in the Renaissance time period. The participants will be dressed in old world costumes as they present about two hours of entertainment--including a puppet show, a short drama, music, and a wonderful meal. On top of all that, there will be face painting, caricature drawing, temporary tattoos, picture-taking opportunities, the sale of "love potions" and roses, and a chance to "dunk the castle staff".

Garrigan has been hosting madrigal productions for almost fifteen years. It has become a holiday tradition, and again this year the music will center around the birth of Christ. This year's madrigal will be presented on Sunday, December 17, in Friedmann Auditorium. The brunch festivities will begin at 11:30, with seating at noon. The menu will include quiche, and the price is just $12. The dinner entree is Cornish game hen, with a price of $16. Dinner festivities will start at 6:30, with seating available at 7pm. You can call Judy Besch for at 295-9259 for tickets.

Choir director Todd Herbst-Ulmer has been busy creating a surprise script for the madrigal. Angie Kohlhaas will be the madrigal queen, and Andrew Hellman will be the king. Others at the center of the madrigal festivities include Amanda Freking, Jeff Hellman, Cathy Hellman, Steven Kellner, and Kelly Kohlhaas--as well as Chris Kohlhaas, Rebecca McGuire, John Kohlhaas, Mandy Rahm, Paul Loebach, David Murphy, Ellie Reising, Adam Rahm, Marian Studer, and Bob Brandenburg.

In addition to the madrigal itself, these court members will be busy travelling to events all over the area. Tomorrow they'll be performing at the Wesley Parish Christmas Supper. Wednesday is the really busy day for them, though. They'll sing for the Kiwanis Wednesday morning at the Chrome. That afternoon they'll do a special show at the Algona Good Samaritan Center, and then at night they're going caroling. Then Tuesday the 19th the madrigal group will perform for the Algona Lions Club, and Wednesday the 20th they'll sing for the P.E.O. Best wishes on all their performances to everyone involved in madrigal.

This morning seven Garrigan students were up early. They're headed west to Sioux Center for another in the series of math league competitions. Garrigan has done extremely well in math competition in the past few years--which is no surprise, given that on the recent ITEDs the school scored well above average on every single math topic. Competing today are some of the school's top math students--including seniors Angie Kohlhaas and Jennifer Faber, juniors Rebecca McGuire, Cathy Hellman, and Chris Kohlhaas; sophomore Steven Kellner; and freshman John Kohlhaas. Good luck to the whole math team!

Over the past few weeks many of Garrigan's math students have been experiencing a little different point of view in the classroom. That's because Corwith native Bristol Priebe has been doing his studetn teaching here at Garrigan. Mr. Priebe has been working with Mr. Kohlhaas in the Geometry, Math Analysis, and Applied Math classes. Mr. Priebe will be leaving Garrigan after next week, but we're glad he's been able to spend some time with us.

When you're at Golden Bear basketball games this winter, you'll see a group of sophomores cheering on the Bears. Moderators Jayune Krieps and Sara Grandgenett organized this year's basketball cheerleaders. The group includes Jill Johnson, Bridget Hellman, Emily Grandgenett, Hillary Frideres, and Sarah Erdman. The rest of this year's cheerleaders are Keshar Nadkarni, Maria Patterson, Amy Rahm, and Sylvia Weber. A big thanks to these girls for the great spirit they show at games.

This week's Senior Spotlight shines on Sarah Kollasch and Michelle Vitzthum. Here with the details is Autumn Thompson.

Sarah Kollasch keeps busy with a lot of activities. She's a very good musician who's been part of the a cappella choir, and speech is another of her interests. Over the years she has also been active with the school newspaper and yearbook. Sarah will be off to college next year, and we wish her all the best.

You're most likely to hear Michelle Vitzthum's name as one of the key players on the Golden Bear girls' basketball team. Michelle is also active in publications, as an editor of the Paw Prints newspaper and Garrigold yearbook. We wish Michelle good luck in basketball season--and also in the future.

On this week's Golden Bear calendar, today there's the math competition at Sioux Center. Then tonight the Garrigan and Seton staff will have their annual Christmas party.

Tomorrow is the second Sunday of Advent. Monday the freshman basketball teams will host St. Ed's. Then on Tuesday a group of nurses' aide students will have their practical tests.

Tuesday afternoon we'll have a penance service at St. Cecelia's. That night the varsity Bears travel to Iowa Falls. Then on Wednesday there's JV basketball--with the Bears vs. Pocahontas.

Next Thursday there will be no school at Garrigan, and Seton will be dismissing early. The Algona Community Schools will have a normal schedule that day.

Friday we'll be setting up for the madrigal. That night the varsity Bears will be playing at Webster City.

That's the "Bear Facts" for another week. Thanks for listening, and be sure to tune in next week for more news from Bishop Garrigan High School.
