Good morning! I'm Holly Lancaster!
And I'm Nicole Reding! Welcome once again to the "Bear Facts", the weekly radio show from Bishop Garrigan High School.
This week it's music that's headlining our news. Today is Algona Band Day, and Garrigan's own Solid Gold Marching Band is hoping to make a good showing. This year's competition show is called Zoot Suit Riot. The program opens with "It Don't Mean a Thing if It Ain't Got That Swing". Trumpeter Amanda Golwitzer is the featured soloist on that song. Following that up is the title number, and then the percussion and flag line is featured on "Swing, Swang, Swung". The show closes with "Jump, Jive, 'n' Wail".
Mr. Dennis Freking has directed the Garrigan band for nearly a decade. He started with a group that never seriously competed and has molded it into a first-rate small-school band. Mrs. Colleen Schiltz is the flag line coach, and the band's field commander is Ashley Waller. John Mallett directs the Seton band, which will also be part of band day.
The band day parade will start down State Street at 1:00 this afternoon. The Seton band will be toward the beginning-between entries 12 and 13. The Garrigan band will be later on, between entries 79 and 80. The field competition will start around 5:45. Garrigan will present their field show at 6:22pm. We invite everyone to come over to the Algona High football field to see the show. Good luck to the band today and again next week, when they'll compete in the state marching contest in Ft. Dodge.
Band day isn't the only musical event coming up this week. Next Wednesday is Catholic Choral Day for the Sioux City Diocese, and this year Garrigan is hosting the big event. Hundreds of students from all over northwest Iowa will be coming to Algona that day. They'll spend the afternoon practicing under the direction of a professional director from Morningside College. Then at 7pm they'll present a concert for the community.
The joint choirs will be singing mostly religious music. Selections include the Kyrie, the Gloria, and a classical selection called "Sine Nomine". Each of the individual school choirs will also be presenting a selection at the festival. Garrigan's own a cappella choir will sing the extremely sad song "All My Trials". The concert will be at 7pm in the Garrigan gym. Admission is $3 for adults, and just $2 for students.
The music department is continuing their fundraiser, collecting pop cans and bottles. The proceeds help with department expenses and also help pay the cost of trips music students take. There are drop-off boxes for your pop cans at St. Cecelia's and at St. Joe-Bode, or you can leave your empties in the Garrigan music room. Be sure to bring in your bottles and cans to help out Garrigan's music program.
Garrigan's fall sports teams have been doing well lately. Last week the Golden Bear football team got a big 50 - 12 victory over Rockford, and on Tuesday the volleyball team beat Humboldt. Monday the cross-country team ran at Algona High, where the girls team took second place, and six runners-Maria Kohlhaas, Tami Lallier, Kelli Black, Carrie Courtney, Chris Scobba, and Jacob Hellman-all medalled for the Bears. Good luck in their upcoming matches to all our fall athletes.
Again this fall the Garrigan fine arts department will present an "Extravaganza", a variety show that highlights the talents of not only students, but also Garrigan teachers and alumni. Mark your calendars. This year's extravaganza will be Saturday, November 6. Showtime is 7pm, and the profits from admission will go to special projects like purchasing a new lighting system for the stage and digital recording equipment for the music department. Be sure to catch the extravaganza, just a month away.
Our Senior Spotlight this week shines on Jill Patterson. Here with the scoop on her is Anthony McGuire.
Jill Patterson is an Algona native who is a football cheerleading captain. She has also lettered in basketball cheerleading, band, and choir. She's in the flag corps, and she's appeared in school musicals. Away from school you might see her working at the Allure Salon. Jill plans to attend college next year, and we wish her all the best.
Thanks, Cobb! On our Golden Bear calendar this week, today is Band Day. Then all next week the freshmen, sophomores, and juniors will continue taking the Iowa Tests of Educational Development.
Monday the Golden Bear volleyball team hosts Iowa Falls, while the freshman and sophomore football players travel to Ft. Dodge to play St. Ed's. Then on Tuesday the cross-country team runs at Eagle Grove.
Wednesday the student council will do their Adopt-a-Highway project near Sexton. We'll dismiss at 12:45 that day to accommodate the Catholic Choral Festival. You can see the concert that night at 7:00.
Thursday the volleyball team hosts Webster City. Friday the football team has a big game against Aplington/Parkersburg. Finally, next Saturday the band competes in the state marching contest at Ft. Dodge.
Finally this week we'd like to extend our sympathy to Garrigan's main office secretary Janet Heupel. Mrs. Heupel's mother died this past week, and we want the whole family to know we're thinking of them.
That's the "Bear Facts" for Band Day. Thanks for joining us, and be sure to tune in again next week to hear all the news from Bishop Garrigan High School.
