THE BEAR FACTS

MARCH 2, 2OO2

Good morning! I'm Keshar Nadkarni!

And I'm Kim Frideres! You're listening to the "Bear Facts", the weekly radio show where we keep you in touch with all the news from Bishop Garrigan High School.

Last week the Golden Bear basketball teams held their awards potlucks. On the boys' side, junior Justin Fickbohm was named Offensive Player of the Year, while sophomores Aaron O'Kane and Scott Stence were the Defensive Players of the Year. Brent Shillington won the Coaches' Appreciation Award, while Adam Arndorfer was named Most Improved Player. Seniors Joe Bartolo and Mark Meister shared the Steve McCall Award, and Jeff Vaske won the Golden Bear Hustle Award. The Bears had two All-Conference players this year. Justin Fickbohm was a unanimous pick for first team all-conference, while sophomore Adam Arndorfer won third team honors.

While 2002 was a rebuilding year for the Golden Bear boys, they did manage to set two new records. As a team they had the best free throw percentage ever, by making 70.7% of their foul shots. Justin Fickbohm broke the season record for free throw percentage, with 85.6% of his shots going in. Justin is also on target to break Eric Scobba's career free throw record, since he now has made 84% of the free throws he has attempted in his varsity career. Congratulations to Justin and to all the boys basketball award-winners!

The girls basketball record book had ten different changes this year-mostly thanks to outstanding senior Ashley Arndorfer. Ashley now holds the records for most points scored in a game (with 42) and a career (with 1,502). She also has the highest average points in a game, with 23.6 in her varsity career. Ashley also holds the game, season, and career records for three-point shots and the season and career percentages for free throws. She also holds the record for most consecutive free throws, by making 24 shots in a row from the charity stripe. In addition to Ashley's personal bests, there was also one team record set by the Bears this year. Like the boys, the girls had their highest ever free throw percentage, with 62.9% of their shots going in.

It's not much of a surprise that Ashley was named the Bears' Most Valuable Player for 2002. Ashley also shared the Dedication Award with Jenna Becker and the Coach's Appreciation Award with Alison Dornbier, Molly Bartolo, and Nellie Fowler. Shelly DeVries and Teresa McGuire won the "Miss Hustle" Award, while Mindy Buscher, Nellie Fowler, and Alison Dornbier were the Most Improved Players. Next year's senior captains were also named. They will be Molly Bartolo, Nellie Fowler, and Janel Richter.

The Golden Bears won the North Central Conference championship, and six Bears were named to All-Conference teams. Ashley Arndorfer was once again a unanimous first-team selection. She is the leading scorer in the conference for the second straight year. She is the first girl in history to repeat as leading scorer in the conference. Mindy Buscher was named to the second team all-conference, while Jenna Becker made third team. All-conference honorable mentions went to Sjhelly DeVries, Alison Dornbier, and Teresa McGuire. Ashley Arndorfer was also an All-District first team selection. Congratulations to all the girls basketball award-winners!

Senior Andy Kardoes also received an honor this past week, when it was announced that he will be representing the North Team at the Shrine Bowl football game this summer. The Bears' starting quarterback has signed a letter of intent to play college football for South Dakota State University. He will play in the Shrine Bowl on July 27 at Jack Trice Stadium in Ames.

There was one other group with good news this past week. Last Saturday Garrigan hosted the district individual speech contest, and nineteen of Garrigan's twenty-four entries earned Division I ratings and will now advance to state. Students earning "I"s include Bob Brandenburg, Rebecca McGuire, Mandy Rahm, Keshar Nadkarni, and Brooke Myers, as well as Rachel Foth, Amber Golwitzer, Christoph Gebele, Steven Kellner, and John Kohlhaas. Also going on to state are Nicole Elbert, Rosalind Kirsch, Chris Kohlhaas, Autumn Thompson, and Tony Detrick. Congratulations to the speech team!

This week's Senior Spotlight shines on Rebecca McGuire and Teresa McGuire.

Rebecca McGuire earned "I"s in speech for a self-authored acting selection as well as an after-dinner speech on first dates. In addition to speech, Rebecca has been active in quiz bowl, drama, and music. She's one of the stand-outs on the math team, and she's also a manager for sports. Rebecca will be off to college next year, and we wish her the very best of luck.

You heard Teresa McGuire's name when we went through the basketball honorees earlier. Teresa enjoys all sports, and she also challenges herself with advanced classes in every subject. From time to time, you've also heard Teresa as an announcer here on the "Bear Facts". She'll also be at college in the fall. Good luck, Teresa!

On this week's Golden Bear calendar, the quiz bowl team is in action today as they compete at Eagle Grove. We'll tell you how they did on next week's show.

Monday through Wednesday the danz squad will have try-outs for next week's team. Tuesday they'll be performing at Veterans' Auditorium as halftime entertainment for the state basketball tournament.

Thursday HOSA, the Health Occupations Student Association, leaves for the state conference in Des Moines. Finally next Saturday there's the All-Iowa Drill Team and the quiz bowl team competes again-this time in Ames.

Finally this week, we'd like to offer our condolences to Garrigan religion teacher Deacon Bob Larsen and to Seton teacher Myra Miller, each of whom lost their father this past week-as well as to Jeff Hellman, Tim Richter, Janel Richter, Holly and Heather Forburger, and Mr. Burrow, who lost members of their families. We've had a lot of funerals at Garrigan this spring, and we hope this will be the end for a while. As always, though, our prayers are with the families who have experienced loss.

That's the "Bear Facts" for this week. Thanks for joining us, and be sure to set your dial here again next week, when we'll bring you more news from Bishop Garrigan High School.
